Urban Tech Academy: Optimizing Multi-Modal Transportation and Electric Power Grids

November 13, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

The Urban Tech Academy on November 13th, 2023 brings together academic researchers, industry experts, and graduate students to explore the latest research on multi-modal, electrified transportation systems. Located at the Verizon Executive Education Center, at Cornell Tech’s Roosevelt Island campus in New York City, presentations and discussions will National focus on the numerous technical challenges involved in integrating reliable, low-carbon mobility services and vehicle charging infrastructure.

Organizers:

  • Mahnoosh Alizadeh (UC Santa Barbara)
  • Abhishek Dubey (Vanderbilt University)
  • Anna Scaglione (Cornell University)

Morning Session: Optimizing Electrified Multimodal Transportation

This session will cover algorithms and optimization methods for multimodal transportation accounting for charging costs and constraints Some of the key areas of discussion will include the planning of the infrastructure deployment and the development and analysis of dynamic routing algorithms to optimize the services, the integration of real-time data and predictive modeling for improved operational efficiency, the design of demand-responsive algorithms to address fluctuating passenger demands, the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques in optimizing micro-transit networks.

  • Scott Moura, Associate Professor, UC Berkeley
  • Saar Golde, Chief Data Scientist, Via
  • Aron Laszka, Assistant Professor, Penn State
  • Venu Garikapati, Team Lead, NREL
  • Andrea Lodi, Professor, Cornell University
  • Rob Ewaschuk, Principal Engineer for Bikes and Scooters,  Lyft

Afternoon Session: Grid Integration of Electrified Transportation Services

This theme explores the multifaceted interconnections between transport electrification and the electric grid, including the impact of electric vehicles (personal EVs, Bus and EV fleets, Medium and Heavy-duty trucks etc.) on grid infrastructure, grid stability, and energy management strategies. Participants will engage in insightful discussions on smart charging technologies, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) integration, energy storage solutions, and grid resilience in the context of transport electrification. It is also useful to consider distributed renewable resources and the need, opportunities and added complexity of decarbonizing generation while electrifying transportation.

  • Anurag Srivastava, Professor, West Virginia University
  • Varun Adibhatla, Head of Data Science & Analytic, NYC School Bus Umbrella Services, Inc.
  • Lang Tong, Professor, Cornell University
  • Benjamin de la Peña, CEO, Shared Use Mobility
  • Ziqi Song, Associate Professor, University at Buffalo
  • Zhaomiao (Walter) Guo, Assistant Professor, University of Central Florida
  • Junjie Qin, Assistant Professor, Purdue University
