Calgary Haines-Trautman
Urban Innovation Fellow, NYC Mayor's Office of Contract Services
Calgary Haines-Trautman is an interdisciplinary design researcher and strategist dedicated to using human-centered design to empower stakeholders, improve customer experiences, and drive innovation in public-facing institutions confronting complex challenges. Calgary most recently worked with Open Contracting Partnership as a Design and Research Consultant for the City of Portland’s Procurement Team, where she led the research, co-design, and delivery of user-friendly, results-driven Request for Proposals templates. Previously, Calgary has worked as a User Experience Designer and in the Design Operations Team at Coforma, and as a Design Strategist Consultant for the City of Boston’s Strategic Procurement Team, delivering tools and insights that enabled positive change. Her work in civic tech draws upon her background in community engagement, product development, and workshop design and facilitation built in museums and arts organizations in Chicago. Calgary holds a Master of Design in Industrial Design from the Rhode Island School of Design and a bachelor’s degree in the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Science and Medicine from the University of Chicago.
Project Description Making NYC’s procurement process more user-friendly and nimble by finding and implementing opportunities for reform. The City can only deliver innovations to its residents if we are able to buy the goods and services that enable these innovations. The Fellow will help build the updated procurement infrastructure to make this happen.

The Fellow will help build the updated procurement infrastructure to make this happen.
- Establish new procurement approaches, tools, and guidance that make it easier for the City to do business - Standardize challenge-based procurement process with templates and guidance materials
- Work with partner agencies to help procure innovative services and products across the City - Conduct outreach with relevant sectors to create interest in new procurement opportunities; Work with other oversight partners to shepherd procurements through approval process
- Identify and pursue opportunities for additional procurement reforms - Work with MOCS business units to procure innovative solutions for MOCS portfolio
